Keyframes in AI video release notes

A keyframe is an image the generated video must pass through: the first frame, the last frame, or a frame in between. As of 2026-09-25.

Runway's notes show the term growing. Gen-3 Alpha Turbo took first and last keyframes in October 2024 and a middle keyframe in December 2024. Luma's Ray3 Modify added keyframe controls for editing in December 2025.

Kling uses keyframes in another direction: in January 2026 its app could pull keyframes out of an existing video to use as the start and end frames of a new one. Runway describes MiniMax Hailuo 3.0 and Seedance 2.0 Fast as supporting keyframes in its arrival notes.
