When did AI video models add vertical video?

Runway opened vertical generation to all users on Gen-3 Alpha Turbo in September 2024 and added Expand Video for new aspect ratios that November. Veo widened aspect ratio options in September 2025 and brought portrait to every resolution in January 2026; LTX-2.5 launched in portrait and landscape in August 2026, with 4K in both by September. As of 2026-09-25.

Vertical video matters for phones and for short dramas, and it arrives in notes in two forms: generating in a tall shape, and reshaping a clip after the fact. Runway's Expand Video and Luma's Reframe are the second kind; they paint new picture around a clip to fit another aspect ratio.

Generation in portrait often comes with limits at first. Google's January 2026 notes are about removing them: portrait at all resolutions in the Gemini API, and 9:16 for reference-to-video on Vertex AI. LTX's pro model reached 1440p and 4K in 9:16 as well as 16:9 in September 2026.
